NEW OFFICERS FOR 2007!!!!
At our upcoming January meeting we welcome our new Executive Officers. John McLaughlin will be the new President, Sue Altkin will serve as Vice President. Francesca Sansone is Secretary and Linda Beatty will take over the Treasury from Jim Finnigan, who opted not to run for personal reasons. There are many years of experience and loads of skill and spirit to be found in our four new officers. This is truly a powerhouse of a Board, and I know we will all help and support them in every way.
Serving as President of BSC has been an incredible experience. I am grateful for the support and cooperation from all of you. To my fellow Board members a very heartfelt thanks, not only for the splendid jobs you have all done with such diligence, but for your unfailing good humor and comradeship.
Do any longtime members recall the days when the sloop Woody Guthrie had the most beautiful wooden deck on the Hudson? Time, weather and thousands of footsteps have left their mark, and the Woody is now having a deck replacement. The sloop remains in Albany as work on the deck continues. To help finance the repairs we will be having a Fun-raising Dinner (pun intended) at River Terrace in Beacon on Feb 3rd, with live music and great food. Keep turning the pages of this newsletter for more particulars...

The Beacon Sloop Club Broadside is the official monthly newsletter of the
Beacon Sloop Club, Inc.
The Beacon Sloop Club, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer environmental education/action and sailing organization dedicated to cleaning-up the Hudson River and it’s environs. Our main focus is the Beacon, Fishkill and Newburgh area.
Members meet the first Friday of every month at the Sloop Club Building located just across from the Beacon Train station. Look for the building with the pine tree growing out of the roof! A potluck dinner starts at 6:30, bring a covered dish to share and your own place setting. The general meeting starts at 7:30 and lasts about an hour or so. The meeting is followed by a sing-along.

Nautical Word of the Month
Last month's word challenge: Heel
The after end of a ship's keel, and the lower end of the stern-post to which it is connected. Also, the lower end of any mast, boom, bowsprit, or timber. Also that part of the end of the butt of a musket which is uppermost when at the firing position. To heel. To lie over, or incline to either side out of the perpendicular: usually applied to a ship when canted by the wind, or by being unequally ballasted.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed their time and energy and equipment to help create our new floor, especially Rick and Kristan, Mark McCarroll, Tinya Seeger, Mary Schmaltz, Liz Redwell, Pete Seeger, Kurt Hauck, John Chaplin, Ron Bel, Keith Kassner, Kevin McDonnell, Sol Rozinsky, Mead and Andrew…for researching, buying, mixing, pouring, leveling, cleanup, painting, sweeping, powerwashing, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning, and on and on and on.

Woody Report

Work is progressing on the new deck for the Woody Guthrie at Scarano Boat Builders in Albany. It is hoped that this will be finished before Christmas.
You will see details elsewhere in the Broadside regarding a fund raising dinner to defray repair costs to be held in early February. A grant request has been submitted to Hudson River Improvement Fund and we will know the results of that in January. The Woody Sailors are also planning other fund raising activities, such as sales of Tee-shirts and Woody hats. There will be a new handout to be given to all guests who sail on her this summer. This will not only provide information about the boat and the River, but should provide a mechanism for increased donations from guests. A new manual for Woody Sailors is being prepared, based on a historical manual created quite a number of years ago by Pete and past (maybe some present) Captains. This is a reminder to all Woody Sailors that membership in the Beacon Sloop Club is required to participate, so be sure to renew in January, if you have not already done so.

Opening: Phyllis Newham opened the meeting shortly after 7:30 PM. At this time she announced Jim Finnigan had informed the Executive Board he would not be able to run again for Treasurer. Some discussion followed.
Woody Dinner: Tom LaBarr gave details of the Woody fundraising dinner to be held Dec 3rd at the River Terrace in Beacon (see notice in this newsletter for more information).
Building Committee: Sue Altkin thanked those who worked with her on the floor, resurfacing and painting, and later cleaning up after the flood. Sue also asked for volunteers to help fix the area of clubhouse roof around the opening through which our tree grows. Toshi Seeger made a motion to appoint a committee including Lou Sebesta, Sue Altkin, David Cohen, and any other interested parties to work on this. The motion was seconded by Mike. The motion was passed with no opposing votes. Saul Rozinsky, and Ira Macintosh volunteered as well.
A Request: Mike Scolnik asked that during the round robin singing after the meeting, those not involved please hold their conversations at the end of the clubhouse farthest away from the singing so as not to drown out or compete with the singers and musicians.
Woodcutting: Lou Sebesta thanked everyone who helped cut wood before the meeting for the clubhouse fireplace. He named Pete, Ira, Ron Herman among those who helped. Lou plans on holding a woodcutting party before the general meeting each month, starting around 3:00 PM.
Wanted: Sue Altkin announced the club is looking for a monitor or any speaker.
Treasurer Candidate: Phyllis called for volunteers to run and nominations for Treasurer. Karen was nominated, but declined.
Candidates: Steve van der Merwe of the Nominating Committee invited the candidates for office on the Executive Board to speak and to take questions. A clipboard for written questions was passed and questions were later posed to each of the presidential candidates. The two candidates for President, Saul Rozinsky and John McLaughlin spoke and responded to questions. Sue Altkin, one of the VP nominees spoke. The other VP nominee, Dave Eberle, was not present. Fran Sansone, the sole nominee for Secretary, spoke briefly. Linda Beatty was nominated for Treasurer. She accepted the nomination.
Youth Program: Viv Worthham volunteered to work with next year's president to implement a program to attract more youth to the sloop club.
Secretary Casting Single Vote: An informal decision was made to have the secretary cast a single vote for each of the two unopposed candidates. Alan Zollner raised an objection to the lack of proper proceedings. A motion was then made to have the acting secretary (Nancy Farren) cast a single vote for each of the two unopposed candidates. The motion was seconded and carried with five opposed. The Secretary cast one vote for Linda Beatty for Treasurer and one vote for Fran Sansone for Secretary.
Ballots: The ballots were collected to be counted by Steve Van der Merwe, Kevin Haydon, and Tom LaBarr.
River Pool At Beacon: Alan Zollner gave background and an update on the pool project. He presented the results of the recently held board elections and thanked outgoing board members. There are three continuing board members serving two-year terms: Sue Altkin, Laurel Bezker, and Nancy Yambam. The new board members are as follows: Akiko Busch, Michael Gersh (Treasurer), Betty Harkins, John McLaughlin, Saul Rozinsky, Alan Zollner (President), Cynthia Cowden (Vice President), and Donald Wilen.
Gift wrap: Pete Seeger spoke about making gift wrap from old newspaper and ink and invited all interested to come make gift wrap Saturday morning after the meeting. Viv Worthham spoke briefly about this as well.
Announcements: Some announcements were made.
Advertisement Motion: Alan Zollner made a motion that the club advertise Kazi Oliver’s Drummers and Dancers event on January 19th at The Paramount in the Broadside. The motion was seconded by Mike Scolnik. The motion was carried. A decision was also made to pass the hat to buy an ad in the Journal. $85 was raised in the hat pass. The Sloop Club agreed informally to make up the difference of $35 to buy the ad.
Election Results: Steve Van der Merwe announced the results of the election which are as follows: John McLaughlin: President. Sue Altkin: Vice President. Fran Sansone: Secretary and Linda Beatty: Treasurer. Steve then distributed Beacon Sloop Club hats to the winning candidates.
Vote Count: Some questions regarding the vote count followed. Fran Sansone made a motion that the vote count be given. The motion was seconded and carried. Steve Van der Merwe gave the vote count as follows: Saul Rozinsky: 33. John McLaughlin: 39. Sue Altkin: 51. Dave Eberle: 19. Steve Schwartz: 1.
The meeting adjourned at 9:10 PM.
